Some quotes of Patanjali's Yoga Sutras we studied from
The Science of Self Realization, by: Roy Eugene Davis

Yoga is practiced to weaken and eliminate all obstacles to Self and God realization.

Some restrictions which can cause suffering and interfere with endeavors to be
Self and God realized are egoism, illusions, attachments, aversions,
and confusion about birth and death.

Egoism results from undiscerning identification with mind and matter.
Preoccupation with pleasurable sensations produces affection for them
that causes attachments. Aversion is dislike of, and a desire to avoid,
that which caused or may cause discomfort or pain.

To weaken and neutralize harmful inclinations, replace them with constructive actions. Harmful inclinations can be overcome by choosing and performing opposite actions.

Practice of yoga eliminates obstacles to Self knowledge.
Refraining from harmful behaviors, faithful adherence to constructive practices,
firm meditation posture, pranayama practice, internalized attention, concentration,
meditation, and Samadhi are the eight limbs of yoga practice.
Sanskrit: Yama, Niyama, Asana, Pranayama, Pratyahara, Dharana, Dhyana, Samadhi
